From the wetlands of the southeastern U.S., this charming semi-deciduous shrub brings an understated elegance to that low-lying problem spot in your garden. Shorter than its titi relatives, it also has smaller, slender leaves that glow glossy green in summer and turn orange to deep red in autumn. Although Littleleaf Titi will shed its leaves for most Mid-Atlantic winters, a mild season might find it holding on to some. But its most dramatic showing is arguably in early summer when it produces abundant white blooms, 1–3 inches in length. The individual flowers are small, but they are clustered along central stems that cascade in a shower of honey-scented blossoms. The yellow-brown fruit that follows adds to the plant’s visual interest and provides forage for birds. Although Littleleaf Titi won’t win any growth races, it is tolerant of wet soils, generally low-maintenance, and uncommonly offered.
