This dwarf hybrid of Aesculus pavia and Aesculus sylvatica sports large, showy panicles of red flowers in May, transforming into an irresistible hummingbird magnet. The palmately lobed leaves turn yellow in fall, providing another season of interest. Flowering is best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil, but part shade helps to prevent leaf scorch, so site accordingly. The dwarf habit of this tree makes it especially suitable to small spaces.
Conditions: Full sun to part shade; prefers moist, well-drained soil, but adaptable; tolerates drought once established
Size: 10'-12' tall, 6'-8' wide
Zone: 4-9
Wildlife Value: Flowers attract hummingbirds
