If we were to ask Edward and Bella, we have a feeling they might have a particular proclivity for this perennial woodland plant. As the common name promises, the large basal leaves typically reach 4”- 8” in width, making them the star of the show. In August and September, sparse clusters of violet and pale blue with yellow centers rise above the dramatic foliage. According to lore, this species may also be called “lumberjack toilet paper” (but don’t quote us on that).

Conditions: Part to full shade; moist, well-drained soils

Size: 2’ – 4’ tall

Zone: 3 - 8

Wildlife Value: Flowers attract bees and small butterflies; larval host for Pearl Crescent butterfly
