Meet another intriguing member of the trillium tribe, Prairie Trillium. A woodland rogue, this trillium has sepals that swoop low like secretive whispers and clawed maroon petals that curl inward, hiding what looks like a brooding, blood-red heart and giving rise to its darker alias, "Bloody Butcher". After the early spring flowers fade, trios of mottled olive-green leaves steal the show with their shade-dappled allure. True to its more subdued common name, Prairie Trillium, this Midwest native is fond of prairies and mesic woods, infusing shady gardens with sun-flecked wildness as it weaves tidy, slow colonies alongside ferns, wild ginger and other spring ephemerals. Tough, long-lived, and delightfully undemanding once settled, it offers some of the first joyful pops of color just as the garden stirs awake.
