Found as a chance seedling in the woods of Alabama in 1969, this selection of Oakleaf Hydrangea sports enormous (up to 12”) pyramidal panicles of showy, mildly fragrant white flowers that gradually fade to pink then tan. Flowers are formed on old wood, so any pruning should be done immediately after bloom to avoid removing next year’s flower buds. True to its name, the leaves look like large oak leaves, but unlike oaks, they develop spectacular red to burgundy to purple fall color. In winter, after the leaves fall, the ornamental dried flowers and the exfoliating cinnamon to tan bark provide seasonal interest. This upright, rounded, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub lends a rather coarse, almost tropical texture in the landscape. It makes a striking specimen or can be used for an informal hedge.

Conditions: Full sun to part shade; prefers organically rich soil with medium moisture
Size: 5'-8’ tall, 5'-10’ wide
Zone: 5 - 9
Wildlife Value: Flowers attract bees and butterflies
