Big Bluestem is one of the “Big Four” warm-season, perennial grass species that are characteristic of the tallgrass prairies that once covered large swaths of central North America. Another common name for this grass is Turkey Foot, so named for its seedhead that typically branches into three parts. Big Blustem is long-lived and easy to grow, spreading mostly by rhizomes, and once established, the deep roots make it resistant to drought. The stems grow can grown to an impressive 8 feet, boasting blue-green hues during summer, while turning shades of russet orange in the autumn to add further visual interest to the garden.
