With its large clusters of white, fragrant flowers from July to September, coupled with its resistance to powdery mildew and its sturdy habit, 'David' has long been one of the most popular garden phlox varieties. First discovered as a seedling at Brandywine Conservancy, this phlox quickly gained popularity. Beyond its many aesthetic qualities, David Garden Phlox is also highly adaptable and resilient, tolerating light shade, clay soil, deer and rabbit pressure, and even the juglone of black walnut trees. Unsurprisingly, David Garden Phlox ranked high in Mt. Cuba Center’s phlox trials, making it an easy choice for any gardener. Plus, it’s an excellent cut flower!

Conditions: Full sun to part sun; medium, well-drained soil; tolerates clay soil
Size: 3’-4’ tall, 2’-3’ spread
Zone: 3-8
Wildlife Value: Flowers provide nectar for long-tongued pollinators, especially swallowtail butterflies, Sphinx Moths, Hawk Moths, and others; larval host for some moth species, including Olive Arches Moth and Darker Spotted Straw Moth
