The unique, hooded flowers of Appalachian Turtlehead are said to resemble turtle heads, giving rise not only to its common name, but also to its botanical name Chelone. In late summer and fall, the turtlehead flowers bob curiously above a sea of deep green leaves to snap at the warm breeze. This plant thrives in wet soils in part shade and adds height and color to shady spots during an otherwise quiet time in the garden. 'Hot Lips' is a cultivar that has intensely pink flowers and especially dark green foliage.
