Whether you call it Hornbeam, Ironwood, Musclewood, or even Blue Beech, this tree is something special. It’s a small, understory tree, excellent for a shady yard or forest edge. Musclewood comes from its smooth, sinewy bark, which twists like flexing muscles. Its fiery, orange-red fall foliage has been known hang on throughout the winter, a phenomenon known as marcescence, giving these trees a soothing rustle on windy winter days. 'Iron Cascade' is a selection chosen for its weeping habit, which coupled with its distinctive smooth gray bark, makes for an interesting and unusual architectural specimen, especially in winter.
