First introduced in 1885, ‘Newton Sentry’ is a veteran, striking selection of our native sugar maple noted for its extremely narrow and upright form. This tree grows slowly to a height of nearly 50 feet with a spread of only 10-15 feet, making it an excellent choice for narrow spaces or as a vertical accent in the landscape. Its rich green foliage turns vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall, providing the spectacular autumn color that gardeners and leaf-peepers alike have come to expect of sugar maples. The original specimen still grows near the main entrance of Newton Cemetery in Newton, Massachusetts, standing guard and welcoming visitors to the tranquil grounds beyond.
